Happy New Year!

Where has the time gone? It seems like just a few days ago we were seeing Christmas decorations line store shelves. By now the dust has finally settled on those same shelves, the last of the Christmas paper has been pulled off the dining room lights, and those gifts that were a half size too small have been exchanged. Valentine’s candy can’t be far away.

Today of all days it is appropriate to consider fresh starts and new beginnings. As we flip that calendar page over to 2012, consider some things before writing anything. At the end of the year what would you like this calendar to look like? What events or activities would you like it to reflect? Some would say more time with family, while others would list that special dream vacation. Regardless of your preference, if it is reflected in the listings, you’ll feel better about it as the year draws to a close. Now is a good time to pencil in those special things.

The following are suggested events for your calendar:

January 14, 2012. J.C. Musser Work Day, held at Boggs #292 @ 9am. Our District copy of the written ritual will be available.

January 21, 2012. Inspection Season starts with inspection of Mt. Carmel #303 in the MM degree. The first section starts at 11am, dinner at noon, resuming immediately after. Please consult the 15^th District web site for the full Inspection schedule. Please note there have been adjustments to the original published schedule.

February 1, 2012. FC degree.

March 31, 2012. Our Inspection in the EA degree. Snacks served at 9am, Inspection starts at 10:00am.

April 13, 2012. 15^th District Grand Masters Reception. Held at the Huntsville Event Center, Huntsville, OH. Dinner scheduled to start at 7pm.

Although attendance at the above is earnestly solicited, the arrival of winter makes it appropriate to discuss caution. Previous years we were informed that Lodges were not permitted to cancel meetings due to weather conditions. This has since been relaxed, permitting cancellations if the safety of the brethren was at issue. Realistically, you are the best judge of safety in your travels, not us. If you decide it isn’t safe to travel to one of our functions, please stay home! We will understand your reason, appreciate that you considered it, and thankful that you are safe. ‘Nuff said.

Merry Christmas!

Can it possibly be?

Christmas is only 24 days away?

Where has the time gone?

Thanksgiving has passed and the rest of the turkey has (finally) disappeared. The expanded edition of Black Friday is over, although the scent of pepper spray lingers in the air. Cyber Monday went by more quietly, but some detect the scent of scorched plastic drifting through Ethernet connections. Locally we’ve also had our first official snowfall of the year, followed by the most recent edition of the Flood of the Century. Despite all the issues and concerns, what better time of the year could there be?

December is a month of parties, events, and festivities. It is hard to resist being included in gatherings at work, with family, and within our social groups. Culminating with New Year’s Eve celebrations, December is probably the brightest month of the year. Each community has special displays and programs, Nativity scenes and services. Even if you enjoy the bustle of the season, these are a great way to relax, recharge, and reconnect with the things most meaningful during the holidays. Don’t know where any of these might be? Just ask your family or neighbors! Chances are they will point you the right direction.

Can it be the Holidays Already?

Every year the days, weeks, and months seem to fly by more quickly. It seems like we were just getting used to the 90+ degrees of summer when we were plunged into the cool temperatures of fall. Then, as we are getting used to the idea of fall, retailers seem intent upon keeping us off balance. Lately while strolling through some major stores, shelf space was being shared by Halloween costumes, Thanksgiving cornucopia, and Christmas tree lights. At this rate we can expect Easter candy displays next week!

As many of you know, our degree work has been temporarily placed on hold. Our candidate is dealing with personal issues that require his attention, which temporarily limits his availability. We are continuing with preparations to be ready when the situation works out. When this changes we will make it known.

Our first meeting in November is always election of officers for the coming year. Those elected for 2011-12 are listed beside the office they accepted:

Long considered the country’s best college football rivalry, it is considered “must see TV” in both states. This year both teams have new coaches. How can shopping possibly compare?

What happened to fall?

OK, we thought summer was too hot, and so was September at first. Then the rains came, along with the cool temperatures. As we attempt to look through the rain-streaked window, the raft is sounding like a better deal. At least until the weather turns cold.

On to business!

We have had the 15^th District Annual Meeting and have information on Inspections as well as the Grand Masters Reception. Full details can be found at http://district15.freemason.com/ .

Our Inspection is scheduled for Saturday, March 31, 2012. We will be offering snacks at 9am, and Inspection in the EA degree will commence at 10am. Since coffee, juice and doughnuts went over well the last time, you might anticipate a reprise of that menu.

The Grand Masters Reception has a longer back story. It will be held on Friday, April 13, 2012 at 7pm at the Huntsville Event Center. The facility is in Huntsville, which is between Bellefontaine and Indian Lake, on route 117. Frequent readers and\or attendees will recall that Karen’s Event Center in Marysville was the location for many years. Unfortunately the catering company didn’t own the building. The owner was forced to sell, and it was purchased by a church. With short notice to seek other locations for our assigned date, the District was fortunate to find this location.

And you thought summer was hot?

OK, we thought summer was hot too. But who thought September would still feature temperatures in the 90’s? So it has been in Ohio this year: one day blizzard, the next day flood. We hesitate to ponder the weather we will experience this coming winter. We are considering orders for ponchos, water wings, and snow shoes. And maybe a raft.

For our first meeting of the year we had anticipated an FC degree experience. Although that is still possible, it appears this will be delayed until a later meeting. Stay tuned for details as they become available. Instead, our Lodge Education Officer has promised a presentation that makes his previous efforts seem like warm-ups in comparison. Get there early for a good seat!

Pass the Lemonade – It’s Hot!!!

We might have to be reminded again how awful the snow and cold temperatures felt last winter. Last week the high dipped into the upper 80’s, and some folks were wearing jackets! Fear not, the forecast for August ensures we will be seeing more of the 90’s than we have so far. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Although it is summer, Lodge related activities continue. At the end of July the first of eight presentations by the Deputy Grand Master, Kevin B. Todd, was held at University Lodge # 631. Our delegation returned with notes, handouts, and a survey form providing insight into the coming Masonic year. RWB Todd gave an excellent presentation, which included two video segments to illustrate points and activities. The entire schedule is included on the July 2011 post below. One is scheduled for every corner of the state, and those able to attend will have the opportunity to share thoughts and ideas with RWB Todd. Did we mention they have refreshments?

We have no Masonic anniversaries for the month of August. Not a great surprise, as Lodges are usually dark during the summer months. We do, however, have several who are celebrating Birthdays during August:

Its official – summer is here!

We’ve finally moved past the cold snow of winter, the watery tempest that was spring, and the flashes of oppressive heat and excessive wind that marked each transition. Summer at last!

June did not pass quietly, courtesy of four hundred Brothers who joined Grand Master Bradford A. Goebel on Friday, June 24^th. The occasion was to lead the Parade of Athletes at the opening ceremonies of the Ohio Special Olympics Summer Games. Grand Master Goebel presented a check for $200,000 from Ohio Freemasons to help sponsor the athletes who participated in this two-day event. The picture above is of the Grand Lodge of Ohio Officers (including Senior Grand Warden James Easterling, seen in the center of the "O," completing one of the items on his bucket list.) Thanks to all who contributed to this year’s Special Olympics, and to those who assisted SGW Easterling up from the turf.

We have no Masonic anniversaries for the month of July. Not a great surprise, as Lodges are usually dark during the summer months. We do, however, have several who are celebrating birthdays during July:

According to the thermometer we’ve moved from spring to summer. Our activities also reflect the transition, even though the calendar doesn’t quite agree. Our full list of events is contained in our previous post, but we have some additional information to share regarding the Special Olympics.

The opening ceremonies of the Special Olympics will take place at OSU Stadium on June 24^th. Ohio Masons will lead the parade, gathering at 6pm at the southeast corner of the Stadium. Requested attire is white shirt and dark slacks. The first 500 Masons to register will receive a hat, and all will receive a special pin. There will be refreshments afterwards at the Recreational and Physical Activity Center (RPAC) near the southeast corner of the Stadium.

As you might imagine, the Special Olympics is a huge undertaking. In previous years there have been between 2500 and 3000 participants. This year it costs $140 to send an athlete to the Summer Games, and Masonic contributions are used to sponsor all athletes. Those wishing to donate can send a check to the Grand Lodge Charitable Foundation. In the Memo space include your Lodge Number, and “Special Olympics” (Special Olympics - #463). Checks can be mailed to:

Some reminders are appropriate. First, all donations to the Charitable Foundation are tax deductible. Second, consider travel times carefully. Taking hints from those who attend OSU football games, traffic can be heavy and parking is never that close. Allowing a little extra time permits arriving relaxed and refreshed, and is much more fun than the alternative.

Spring has sprung!

Spring finally sprung, and is giving way to the warmth of summer. Fields are drying, permitting farmers a chance to till and plant, and our thoughts turn from treading water to backyard cookouts. This week we did see one neighbor driving his tractor-mounted snow blower, but suspect he wasn’t listening to a local forecast.

Our last meeting before summer break featured several enjoyable aspects. The evening started with a fabulous meal prepared by our Senior Deacon, Dave Allman. It was more delicious than words can describe. Our meeting featured presentation of Masonic Service Awards to WB Larry Knapp (50+ years, right photo) and B. Terry Hafer (40+ years, left photo). Photos included with this post portray our WM Milton Lightfoot with these distinguished Brothers. B. Dan Hicks (40+ years) was also scheduled to receive an award but was unable to attend.

We moved on to a two-pronged Masonic Minute by our LEO, Rick Sigrist. The first portion was one of the Grand Lodge mandated Education Programs, the Two Wolves Parable (http://www.freemason.com/images/leo/two-wolves-parable.pdf). The second portion was a walk down memory lane for our award recipients. WB Rick presented minutes for the meetings at which each was raised to be a Master Mason. For Larry this was June 14, 1961, for Terry it was February 2, 1971, and for Dan it was March 17, 1971. Stories and recollections followed, which continued well into the social hour in the dining room.

April showers brought May flowers!

Since our last post we’ve been busy! Many of us have been dodging rains and hanging onto heavy objects to keep from being blown away in spring storms. Mowing has again become both an issue and a blessing. Locating pontoons for mowers has been difficult, but it is a sign that warm weather is finally arriving!

Since we are informally known as the Flood Capital of Ohio each passing storm causes us to watch the all too frequent rise and fall of the river. As residents of Kiwanis Village prepare to return after two months in limbo there are forecasts for additional thunderstorms. Hopefully those storms will bypass our area so the residents can return home, and get used to a “new” normal in familiar surroundings.

OK, we’re not really bragging, just expressing relief. March was such a busy month, both for the Lodge and the community. The last day of February we had “The Flood”, which saw much of our community under water. Things dried out long enough to have our Pre-Inspection visitations, with “The Flood – Part 2” the following weekend. While many of us were pumping or cleaning, the rest of us held meetings, a MM practice, celebrated the newest recipient of the Grand Master’s Excellence in Youth Award, and conducted the MM degree on our newest candidate. A week later we conferred the MM degree for our annual inspection on a pro tem candidate for the pleasure of RWB Paul Robinson. To say we’ve been busy barely covers the situation.

As mentioned above, the 15^th District held its reception for the Grand Master of Masons in Ohio on March 25^th in Milford Center. It is always enjoyable sharing an evening with the leaders of our fraternity. This year we were pleased that one of our nominees, Ben McKinniss, was a recipient of the Grand Master’s Excellence in Youth Award. Ben is a senior at Elgin High school, and anticipates attending Ohio Northern University this fall. He has been active in sports as well as academics, 4-H, church and community activities, and serves as an excellent example of the qualities of character and leadership which form the basis of the award. We are especially pleased to note that for each of the past seven years a nominee from our Lodge has been a recipient of this recognition. While we would love to take credit for some part of this good fortune, we don’t deserve it. The real credit goes to the deserving youth that can be found in each of our communities.

Was It Something We Said, Buckeye Chuck?

As a result of his prognostication last month, we thought we were mere weeks from the sunny warmth of spring. Not so fast my friend! Over a 10-day period at the end of February we experienced two major snow storms, and record-breaking flooding. As one might expect the snow has all but disappeared with the rain, although piles are still present on roadsides and beside driveways. With waters again rising, we’ll keep our fingers crossed, and our boats at the ready.

On March 2^nd we were visited by RWB Paul Robinson, DDGM, and WB Frank Egelsky, DEO, who made it to the village between storms. The purpose was our pre-inspection audit and special presentations. According to their reports, everything was in order, and we were cleared for the next step in the process. WB Egelsky presented the Grand Lodge Education Program, a 20-questions-style questionnaire relating to the Masonic Code, Officer’s Handbook, and degree work. Very enjoyable, and educational. We were also pleased to learn that one of our nominees was selected as the recipient of the Grand Master’s Excellence in Youth Award for the 15^th Masonic District. Ben McKinniss will receive the actual award at the Grand Master’s Reception on March 25^th (see below). Those wishing to be present need to contact the Secretary for reservations.

We would like to share some background details on the recipient of this year’s Grand Master’s Excellence in Youth Award. Ben McKinniss follows in the steps of his older brother Tom, who was selected for this honor in 2007. We were unable to locate a comprehensive history of this award, but believe this is the first time siblings have been honored in this matter. We are also aware that with Ben’s selection, LaRue Lodge has nominated youth selected for this award for the seventh year in a row. As proud as we are of our involvement in the process, we remind the reader that this says less about us than about the quality of youth present in all of our communities. That’s something worthy of celebration!

Bless you Buckeye Chuck!

It has already been a long cold winter. Thanks to the celebrated rodent prognosticator, we are assured that spring is a mere 6 weeks away. Using recent experience as a guide, we suppose that means 12 more significant snowfalls, and 6 more chances to lose power along with our footing. We shudder to consider the possibilities without the impact of global warming.

On the 2^nd we attempted to hold our regular stated meeting, but without effect. The five hearty souls who braved the weather shared travel experiences and mishaps, all of which will be more humorous when the bruises heal. When no additional members arrived, we headed back to our warm homes. Observing our progress on the sidewalk brought to mind Paul Simon’s popular tune, Slip Sliding Away, with a slightly erratic pace.

Much of the discussion on the 2^nd involved the concept of canceling meetings due to ice and snow, declared emergencies, or other exigent conditions. For this reason restating the procedure as it is known to us seems appropriate. Of the four Past Masters present, none recalled ever receiving permission from Grand Lodge to cancel a Stated Meeting. Over the years this issue has been addressed by several Grand Masters, and we know of no change in this position. For that reason, do not expect us to make an announcement canceling a Stated Meeting. That being said, we recognize there are situations where attempting to attend is not recommended. These include declared emergencies, hazardous conditions, and any situation where personal or family safety is an issue. We enjoy gathering for the fellowship on meeting nights, but firmly desire that no one is put at risk to do so. In the grand scheme of things, it is our membership that is important, not the meeting. ‘Nuf said.

Where has the time gone?
It seems like just yesterday we were checking attics and basements for that special box of Christmas ornaments, or prowling crowded stores for unique gifts for a special someone. Since then we’ve had innumerable parties, watched hundreds of hours of sports, and attended hundreds (OK, maybe dozens) of family get-togethers. After celebrating the most special of births we watched a crystal ball disappear into a sea of humanity. Now what, you ask?

Specifically, the “what” is a new year. This new beginning is a chance to renew commitments and chart new paths. Customarily it is the start of resolutions, some of which result in life-long change. Think of the New Year as your personal blank canvas. On it you are free to place any object, interest or activity. The possibilities are endless. Enjoy the adventure!

All the usual milestones have been passed: Thanksgiving, along with the leftover turkey, is history; Black Friday and Cyber Monday passed without major incident – locally; the first day of December featured the first measurable snow fall of the year. Breaking News!

Our meeting on November 17th featured many things. The most exciting was voting on our most recent petition. After a unanimous verdict our WM announced a Special Meeting for Saturday, November 27, 2010. That morning at 9am we will convene for presentation of the EA degree on our candidate. If you're in the area, come on down.

As noted below our installation of officers was held on the 17th. WB Mark Wamack was the installing officer, heading up a team from Latham Lodge. Over the years our Lodges have assisted each other numerous times, this being the most recent. They demonstrate a true example of Masonic fraternity.

Below you may have read our post about LaRue's Christmas in the Village celebration, scheduled for Thursday, December 16th. Originally we planned to have a Lodge Open House that same evening, and had posted to that effect. After reflecting on the scope of the celebration, we decided to schedule our Open House on a different date.

Toward Traditional Holidays

We are obviously deep into fall. High school football has entered their playoffs and the Great Pumpkin has come and gone. The last indication that October occurred is the candy still found under sofas and beds, and little ones experiencing that deep valley after an intense sugar high. As we take our tentative steps toward more traditional holidays, it appears it is time to hang the lawn chairs in the garage, cover the grill, and put away the garden hoses. In short, it’s time to return to indoor pursuits.

Congratulations to all those who participated in our LaRue-style Masonic Trivia Contest. To our knowledge, all who correctly answered each of the 11 questions received their certificate from the Secretary. If you did not, it is waiting at the desk, and you can pick it up at our next meeting.

In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. In 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November. Take time to give thanks for what you hold dear.

November 27, 2010. The Game. Since 1897 The Ohio State University has played the University of Michigan.Between them they have won 77 Big Ten Championships, and 18 National Championships. Long considered the country’s best college football rivalry, it is considered “must see TV” in both states. How can shopping possibly compare?

Autumn in Ohio

It seems like just last week it was 93 degrees in the shade (91 considering wind chill), and we were in the middle of a drought. Come to think of it, that was just last week! This week managed to bring more seasonable weather and activities. Farmers harvesting crops were stirring dust clouds in the fields, the first of the hunting seasons was in full swing, and morning walkers started to experience a nip in the air. As Halloween pumpkins are set out, we are reminded that autumn is not only in the air, but in the stores too.

With the harvest, farmers play out a familiar adage, literally reaping what they sow. After harvest, although some fields lay fallow until spring, much happens behind the scenes in preparation for the coming year. As our Lodge year winds to a close, we experience much of the same. This year we were pleased to raise three MM candidates, welcome back another, and plant the seed of our fraternity with many others. We helped recognize achievements of a high school youth, now enrolled in the Air Force Academy, and assisted others with special activities and recognition.

Now, we are doing the behind-the-scenes work to carry us through the coming year. On each post we include up-coming dates and events of significance to our Lodge. This month we invite you to look at this list with a different thought in mind. Instead of meetings and activities to attend, look upon these as the steps we are taking to ensure a successful harvest next year.

It seems like summer gets shorter and shorter every year. The only parts that seemed way too long were the days over 90 degrees. Was it enough to be willing to usher in the snows of winter? Not a chance!

During our first meeting after our summer break, we were entertained by a variation of a traditional school assignment: What I did on my summer vacation. As you might assume, involvement in sports was a common answer. Most members participated in, attended, or played a video game version of their favorite sports throughout the summer. Travel ranked as the second most common response, with suitably exotic destinations. Among the other activities shared were adventures in gardening, using lawn mowers as dozers, being paid to attend concerts, renewing old acquaintances, and creative driving. We have a thought about the creative driving stories: One can only guess at the odds of that many vehicles having brakes go out at the same location the same week. Attend the next meeting and you'll most likely hear the rest of the story.

On the previous post (below) are the important dates to remember. If you have the opportunity, the 15th District Annual Meeting is worth the travel. At that meeting they finalize dates for meetings and inspections, and convey information relevant for the coming year. Definitely valuable information.

15th District Annual Meeting - Change!

We received notice today that the location of the 15th District Annual Meeting has been changed. It remains scheduled for Saturday, September 11, 2010, at 9am. The location is now at the Marion Federation of Women's Club Home, 1126 E. Center Street, Marion, OH 43302. For those local to Marion, that is close to the K of C Hall on East Center Street.

For those not local to the Marion area, a mailing to each Lodge Secretary included driving directions from their respective Lodge. Brethern coming from the west, and possibly south, should anticipate detours. S.R. 309 through Marion is used for a portion of the Popcorn Festival street vendors. Given the time of day traffic should not be an issue. Allowing a few extra minutes should suffice.

Welcome to August!

Whew! Did we think it had been hot in June? Had we dusted off that crystal ball in the closet we would have known the hot weather had barely begun. Makes us wonder how August will turn out.

As we come toward the end of our summer shut-down we have events and situations of note. Of course our full schedule appears below, with comments. Please check the first two, as they are of some significance.

The first meeting of the fall is always important. Usually this falls after Labor Day, but not this year. Being on the 1st day of September it is sure to sneak up on a few of us. Mark your calendars accordingly.

The second listing is for the District Annual Meeting. As noted below, the District Inspection Schedule is finalized at this meeting, along with more routine issues. The date listed on the District web site is Saturday, September 11, at 9am, with the meeting being held at Marion #70. For those outside Marion County, this might not seem like an issue. Those more local will recognize that as the final day of the Marion Popcorn Festival (September 9-11, 2010). All of downtown (beside the Lodge building) will be closed to vehicle traffic, and most parking spaces will be occupied by street vendors. If this time and place remain correct, we suggest allowing additional time for traffic detours and locating parking. We strongly suggest checking the District web site frequently for updates to either date or location.

Summertime!

It's summertime! How can we tell? School's out, someone turned up the outside thermostat, and the Lodge has had its last meeting until September. But before you think we sneaked into the summer break, we'll provide an update.

To the left is a photo of our Worshipful Master, Milton Lightfoot, welcoming our two newest members. On the left is Josh Zachman, who finished his degree work at the 15th District One-Day Class in May. On the right is Tim Stapleton, who experienced the MM degree on June 2nd. The only thing warmer than the temperature that night was the fellowship experienced. We are also pleased to report that on that night we experienced the third best member attendance of the year, behind only Inspection and the Masonic Service Award Ceremony. Our appreciation is also extended to all those who assisted with the degree experience.

Even though we won't be having meetings until September, there are activities that deserve our attention. The full list is contained in the calendar listings from earlier posts. Of these, two are coming up shortly. The Deputy Grand Master is presenting his program for the coming year through a series of presentations. The first is in Findlay on June 15th, and is described below. The Special Olympics takes place at The Ohio State University on June 25-27.

Did someone turn the thermostat up?

It seems that summer is upon us, or at least the temperatures reflect that thought. But since summer doesn’t officially begin until June 21st (at 7:28 am EDT), we still have much to accomplish before taking our annual summer break. Before jumping to our calendar of events, it is appropriate to glance in the rear view mirror at a recent weekend, and highlight both an important observance and an opportunity.

On May 15th Palestine #158 hosted the 15th District Grand Master’s One-Day Class. We had one candidate among the 29 who were made Master Masons that day. Due to its structure and popularity, this has now become the traditional method of joining our fraternity. For many, such as our candidate, it is a method of completing degree work to resolve scheduling and transportation issues. Our congratulations go out to all who participated in this experience.

On May 31st, at 11am, there will be a Memorial Day service at the Price Cemetery north of LaRue. In addition, a national moment of remembrance takes place at 3 p.m. local time across the country. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates the men and women who have died while in military service. Whether you attend an area service, watch a parade, or spend the day with friends and family, this day provides an opportunity to pause and reflect with appreciation those who have gone before us.

A future event of a different kind merits special notation, and is scheduled for Tuesday, June 15 at 7:00pm. This is the first of 10 presentations of the Deputy Grand Master’s Rollout of Programs for the 2010-2011 Masonic Year. Each year these meetings are held in conjunction with the Grand Lodge Committee on Education and Information. Findlay Lodge #227 will host the event, at 303 Osborn Avenue, Findlay, Ohio. All officers and members are encouraged to attend, and the full schedule can be found on the Grand Lodge web site. The Deputy Grand Master typically shares his plans for the coming year in an open-forum style. The format allows Brothers to ask questions and share their own ideas with him, as well as other Grand Lodge Officers in attendance. It is hard to find a better opportunity to interact with our leadership. For those planning to attend, to quote Deputy Grand Master Bradford A. Goebel, “Business casual would be the proper attire. Any Brother wearing a tie would be overdressed.”

Spring is a busy time everywhere. Ice and snow finally gives way to wind and rain, and temperatures rise to "almost warm enough". Across the country clouds of dust are signs that farmers are tilling and planting, and city-dwellers ponder the issues of mowers, landscaping, and flower beds. As we begin our head-long rush toward summer, our Lodge is busy too!

In an earlier post (below) are photos from our Masonic Awards Night. As noted, that night also featured an EA degree, which has caused ripples in our calendar. Please note our activities below, along with several which might be of general interest to the District.

Time has certainly been speeding by! The warm days and cool nights, combined with the occassional monsoon, remind us that spring has indeed arrived. And just as the temperature has risen, so has the activity level on meeting nights.

Our last post concerned selection of our nominee for the Grand Master's Excellence in Youth Award, and deserves an additional mention. Over the years we have been fortunate to have nominated six recipients of this award. As much as we'd like to take some sort of credit for this good fortune, the real credit goes to these young people and their families. They have provided excellent examples of the results one can expect from hard work and perseverance. Our congratulations go out to all those considered.

At the first meeting in April we had a very full evening. To start things off, B. Dave Allman orchestrated a pasta feast, the likes of which we haven't seen in recent memory. From comments overheard during the evening, it is highly likely he will be asked for several encore performances. After dinner our normal meeting started with recognition of Masonic service. RWB Paul Robinson and WM Lightfoot combined to present service awards to 13 members present. Although every year represents a milestone for a particular member, the formal awards are grouped into recognition for 25, 35, 40, and 50 years of membership. After achieving the 50-year level, additional recognition is provided every 5 years. This year we were fortunate to recognize the 65 years of service of B. Joseph Spitzer.

As if the evening couldn't become more special, we initiated our most recent candidate in the EA degree. It somehow seems appropriate that on the same evening we celebrate years of service, another starts his Masonic journey. WM Lightfoot cautioned that we should be ready for the FC degree at our next meeting. What a wonderful problem!

Grand Master's Excellence in Youth Award

It became official Friday evening at the Grand Master's Reception for the 15th District. Josiah Sayers, nominated by our Lodge, was selected as a recipient of the Grand Master's Excellence in Youth Award. A photo commemorating the event is included above. From left to right are Terry W. We are understandably pleased our nomination was selected. Even more, we appreciate this opportunity to recognize the quality of the young people within each of our communities.

Whew! Things have been busy since our last posting. Exciting things have kept our attention.

The event closing in most quickly is the 15th District's Grand Master's Reception. It will be held March 26th in Marysville at Karen's Event Center. The evening starts at 7pm, with a social hour preceding. This is always an enjoyable gathering, and provides an opportunity to meet and talk with the Officers of the Grand Lodge. Among the features of the evening are the recipients of the Community Service Award, and the Grand Master's Excellence in Youth Award. Frequent readers will recall LaRue has nominated recipients of the Excellence in Youth Award the past five years in a row, and we've submitted a nomination for this year also. While we're pleased about the possibility of stretching our string to six in a row, the real celebration concerns the excellence of the youth in all of our communities. Now that is something to get excited about!

The next event starts with a dinner at 6:30pm on Wednesday, April 7th. We've been promised a delicious pasta creation for all who attend, and we expect a great turnout. The reason to anticipate such great attendance is an Awards Night, celebrating years of service in the Masonic fraternity. Recognition for those achieving 25, 35, 40, 50, and 65 years is scheduled, involving a total of 29 members. We've even invited special guests to assist with the ceremony. It promises to be a excellent evening, even if you aren't receiving an award.

On March 20th found us visiting Senate Lodge #378 for their Inspection in the Master Mason degree. Four traveled from LaRue to Kenton, where they currently hold meetings, where we met up with another member, several of our honorary members, and two others from the 15th District. Had we been considered eligible, we would have won the 10th District Traveling Trophy. Maybe next time.

At our most recent meeting we also considered our most recent petition, voting to proceed to the next step. That makes two progressing through the degrees, with the possibility of more in the future. It makes for a busy time, for all the right reasons.

We passed!

OK, maybe that isn't really a surprise, but it is nice to report. We were pleased to have 41 present at our inspection, 11 of which were our members. In total, there were 29 Past Masters, and three 50+ year members. All this with two Lodges unable to attend. Quite good for an afternoon event during the winter. At the conclusion of the day both DEO Frank Egelsky and RWB Paul Robinson, DDGM, gave us favorable comments. Whew!

A very special Thank You goes out to Bro. Ed Brown. Due to issues with scheduling and communication, our plans for a candidate required several revisions, the last of which occurred as Bro. Brown walked up the steps to the Lodge. On learning of our situation, his gracious offer to assist allowed us to proceed with only a minor delay. This was certainly a fine example of brotherly love and friendship for the good of the fraternity, and we greatly appreciate his generosity.

With a successful inspection behind us, there are still events ahead on our schedule. Take a look, and mark your calendar accordingly.

We've been busy preparing for degree work, Pre-Inspection visits, DEO presentations, Inspection, and a host of things that won't fit into this blog. Even the weather has been a challenge, but it is winter in Ohio, and we're up to the task.

For those not on a cruise, or wintering in Florida, our calendar has the usual items, with some updates.
Check it out:

February 3, 2010. Pre-Inspection visitation by RWB Paul Robinson, and presentation of an Education Program from our DEO. DDGM Robinson promised an answer to any Masonic-related issues during the evening. Many would consider that quite an offer. The education programs are always fun, and remind you that no matter how long you've been a member of the fraternity, there is always more to learn.

February 17, 2010. Practice for Inspection in the FC degree.

February 20, 2010. Inspection in the FC degree. Lodge opens at 3:30pm. Following our inspection, Marion #70 will be holding a dinner at 6:30pm, followed by their inspection in the FC degree, which starts at 7:30pm.

Both groups woke to a coating of snow, reminding us of a blank painters canvas. From this fresh start, we can appreciate all the promise, excitement, and joy 2010 can bring. January 6, 2010. Our first meeting of 2010. We will be having an EA practice, and making plans for future degree work. We have a candidate which might require some weekend meetings, as well as another petition-in-waiting.

January 9, 2010. 15th District Work Day, held at Mt. Carmel #303, starting at 9am. If you've ever had a question about words, procedure, or protocol, this is the meeting to attend. The current District Deputy Grand Masters oversee the program, the District Education Officers will be present, and the hand-written work is available for reference. In addition, there are literally hundreds of years of Masonic experience present for advise, instruction, and coaching. You can't purchase better Masonic training than this provides.

February 3, 2010. Pre-Inspection visitation by RWB Paul Robinson. We also anticipate an Education Program from our DEO. The programs are always fun, and remind you that no matter how long you've been a member of the fraternity, there is always more to learn.

February 17, 2010. Practice for Inspection in the FC degree.

February 20, 2010. Inspection in the FC degree. Lodge opens at 3:30pm. Following our inspection, Marion #70 will be holding a dinner at 6:30pm, followed by their inspection in the FC degree, which starts at 7:30pm.

March 26, 2010. 15th District Grand Master's Reception, held at Karen's Event Center, Marysville, starting at 7pm. We've been informed there have been a large number of nominations for the Grand Master's Excellence in Youth Award, as well as the Community Service Award. It is always a fun evening, with great food, and an opportunity to meet the Grand Lodge Officers. Tickets will be available soon through the Secretary's Office.

May 15, 2010. One-Day Class to be held at Palestine #158. Details will be posted when available.

'Tis the Season

OK. Take a deep breath.

The last of the wrapping paper has drifted to the floor, except for that piece stuck to the ceiling fan. The dog has finally stopped chasing the remote controlled toys, settling instead for leftovers from the kids plates. And the company has disappeared through the door with promises to "Do it all again next year!". Threat? Promise? Who knows.

What we do know is this. We are truly blessed, enjoying a standard of living unknown in most of the world. Enjoying opportunities that our parents and grand-parents barely considered possible. Amid the hustle and bustle of the season, take time to reflect not just on what's on sale, but on what we have and hold dear. Only then can we really appreciate the real reason for the season.

From the members of LaRue Lodge, we hope you've had a Merry Christmas, and look toward a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

Whew! This is a busy time of year. First there are all the "outside" reasons: elections, Thanksgiving, holiday shopping and parties, Christmas, New Year's celebrations, etc., etc. Then there are the "inside" reasons: the end of the Masonic year, audits, reports, election of officers, installations, work day, and preparing for the inspection schedule. Just when we thought life would slow down with cooler temperatures.

Our meeting on 12-2-09 featured the installation of officers, with WB Mark Wamack as the Installing Officer. Below is a list of all those elected or appointed to serve the Lodge during the coming year. Of particular note, each was able to make the installation ceremony. During cold and flu season, this alone is remarkable.

It has been a busy time for us. Grand Lodge has come and gone, we had a special meeting to confer the MM degree, and there are many more things on the horizon.

Our Special Meeting was held on 10-31-09, raising our most recent candidate. It was quite an event, as we had 6 visitors from outside the District assisting with the work. The bulk were from Orient Lodge #321, Waverly, Ohio, who made a day of the experience. And as the dust was settling, additional petitions were requested. Sounds like a great problem!

One bit of news that might otherwise get lost in our activity concerns our roof. As one of the longest-running concerns of any building, ours has again been refurbished. More accurately, it has been re-coated. The project was a little more expensive than we'd prefer, but such is the price of staying dry. And we all like that.

As far as we know at this time, here are the important events in our future:

November 4, 2009. Annual meeting. Our 2009-10 slate of officers will be chosen. Attend, and make your voice heard. Maybe even take an office!

OK, it's official - we have a MM degree scheduled. The WM called a Special meeting for Saturday, October 31, 2009. Lodge opens at 1pm. Obviously this is a special occasion, which includes guests from outside the District. Be there if you can.

Petitions! After a dry spell, we voted on our most recent one at our last meeting. And another is anticipated soon. This promises to be an active winter.

OK, it has been a while since our last post. Thanks to all who have mentioned it, and thanks for those who successfully migrated to our new site. In the future we'll try to do a better job with the updates.

We've had two meetings since our summer break, and have been busy since the first rap of the gavel. We've passed a candidate to the FC degree, received a new petition, have another waiting "in the wings", and have plans for a MM degree experience yet this month. And we're just getting started!

One interesting item is a routine function with an unexpected twist. In September we mailed the 2010 dues notices. Nothing new there. Courtesy of the MORI system, we included a Member Profile for each member. This contains the customary contact information, as well as the member's Masonic record. These apparently have been a hit with the membership, prompting many comments, and a couple concerns. We welcome both. It is nice to have your own copy of your Masonic history, and it has helped ensure we have accurate records. Everyone wins.

As you can see below, our schedule is busy. So, take a good look and make your plans accordingly.

September 13, 2009. The 15th District Awards Banquet was held at the Plaza Inn, in Mt. Victory. No, we didn't win anything this year, but it was nice to be in the running.

October 7, 2009. We will be practicing the MM degree. It is also anticipated we will be voting on our most recent petition.

October 16-17, 2009. 200th Grand Lodge Communication, Toledo, Ohio.

In the most recent issue of "The Beacon" (July/August 2009), we received information on the Grand Master's One Day Class from June 13th. Totaling all 25 Districts in Ohio, the day resulted in 2,340 new Master Masons. A breakdown by District was not available, but the article mentioned that PDDGM Jerry Belt presided over the 15th District Master Mason degree, with his son as the working candidate. Congratulations to all who joined, participated in, and attended the events.

There might have been a chilly rain outside, but the warmth inside was delightful. And busy! Great pizza started the evening, with excellent conversation leading into the meeting. Our night included:

- A 25-year pin presentation to B. Robert Everly
- Our LEO, WB Rick Sigrist's Masonic Minute presentation celebrating B. Everly's MM degree from the April 4, 1984 minutes.
- The EA lecture and charge were given to our newest member.
- The EA exam was returned in an excellent manner by our newest member.
- Our DDGM, RWB Goff presented two Grand Master's pins.
- Our DDGM, RWB Goff, led the lodge in a spirited game of "Are You More Knowledgeable Than An Entered Apprentice?"

Before wishing the membership a great summer, WM Lightfoot announced we would be exemplifying the FC degree at our next meeting, September 2nd.

As we head toward our summer break, we are keeping busy. Our most recent member was initiated on the 20th. Congratulations! Due to scheduling difficulties the lecture and charge will be given at our next meeting. With more petitions still out, it sounds like we will have a busy fall.

For our next meeting we have a full night scheduled. We start at 6:30pm with a pizza dinner. W, Ned Goff, our DDGM, is presenting a special Masonic Education program, which he promises will be fun and instructive! There will be recognition of Past-Masters of LaRue Lodge, with plenty of opportunity to share favorite moments from those years. We will be presenting a 25-year pin, and the above-noted EA lecture and charge.

Food, fun, and fellowship - a hard combination to beat. See you there!

Wow! Did we ever have a busy evening at our last meeting! Here is a summary of the highlights.

- Our most recent petition received a favorable vote. Performance of the EA degree is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, May 20th, at 7:30pm.

- We had two Masonic Minute presentations.
1) WB Wamack reported on his recent FC inspection, and thanked the Lodge for the practice time during a recent meeting.

2) WB Sigrist gave a presentation on the Grand Lodge Dispensation granted to hold the FC degree at Ohio Village Lodge on March 15, 1984. Recollections of that evening were shared by those in attendance. Our candidate that night is also scheduled to receive his 25-year pin at our first meeting in June (see below).

RWB Spracklen gave a report on our transition to dimmable CFB bulbs in the Lodge room. Roughly half of the bulbs have already been replaced, with the remaining bulbs on back-order. During a demonstration they dim as well or better than incandescent bulbs. Although the take a few minutes to achieve full brightness when switched on, they provide sufficient light.

Here are some important dates to remember:

June 3, 2009. Past Masters recognition, and special Masonic Education program. The evening will start with pizza at 6:30pm. Past Masters will be recognized, and a 25-year pin presentation is on the schedule. Following, RWB Ned Goff, DDGM, will be presenting a special Lodge Education Report and Program for our membership. He promises a fun evening, so be sure to attend.

Welcome Home - Again!

Frequent readers will recall our posts from our former Expage site, or our more recent effort at Geocities ( http://www.geocities.com/larue463/larue463.html ). Sadly, the days for both have passed. Expage dropped their free web sites, which caused the initial switch. As Geocities was part of Yahoo, it was presumed to be a more permanent location. And it was, until April 2009. At that time we were informed free web hosting was being discontinued, necessitating another move. And here we are!

What can you expect from us? Since the beginning of our web presence, we've tried to provide a twice-monthly newsletter of sorts, listing recent topics and events from meetings, celebrating birthdays and Masonic anniversaries, and noting significant events for the Lodge calendar. We feature links to web sites for the 15th District, Grand Lodge of Ohio, Ohio Masonic Home, and the first 100 years of our individual history. Special communications are shared, along with changes as they impact our membership. In short, if you miss a meeting, we try to fill you in.

What do we expect from you? Feedback and participation pretty well cover it. Tell us how to improve our information sharing techniques.
